Stealth Advertising

Sunday, February 29th, 2004

Somebody in the, erm, “male genital enhancement” industry decided to use our comment section as free advertising. 4 comments across the archives. Baleeted.

Another online gaming spammer tried to sneak one in again. Baleeted.

Addendum:

So as it turns out, the “spam in comments” thing is a common problem now. Here’s an article discussing how spammers are clogging blogs.

QuickMatch Replacement

Friday, February 27th, 2004

So, that QuickMatch thing is pretty cool and all. However, I’ve come across a replacement. Now, we wouldn’t necessarily need a replacement if we ONLY played Battlefield. But that isn’t the case for me :-p I’ve been playing America’s Army and messing around with Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo.

So the replacement is called Xfire. And I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking enough with the new “nifty” apps, right. Well, I think this one is going to be well worth the 90 seconds it takes to get it downloaded, installed, and running.

The cool part about this program is that it’s not specific to Battlefield. A friend can be playing one of a large number of games and you can join them from this app. What’s even better is that you’re not confined to finding and joining the game servers via some external interface like QuickMatch does. This one apparently just monitors those games. So, I can just launch a game, find a server, and join it. And then you can see what game I’m playing, what server I’m in, some cool extra info (like how many players and sometimes the player list), and join me.

The other thing that looks good is that UT2004 Demo is on there, which leads me to believe that they add new games as they come out. Actually yep, there it is on the bottom of the two lists of games. They DO add new games regularly. This could come in real handy if Half-Life 2 ever comes out.

But how many can I stuff in my mouth?

Science at its best.

“Hey Bob, M&M’s have a better pack density than gobstoppers!

And why will anyone care? I dunno. Say something about making stronger ceramics, and pass me the candy dish.

Unreal Tournament 2004

Friday, February 13th, 2004

I’m really starting to think this demo is a worthy download. I liked UT and UT2003 (especially Bombing Run). Plus, plenty of people are raving about it, and I found a review that rates the different aspects of the game. One claim made by the reviewer that I really hope is true is:

Best of all you only need to mid-range system to run UT2004 at high or at its highest settings.

In addition to the new gametypes and other nice additions and changes, they also have some speech recognition implemented (it sorta sounds like they’ve not completely integrated it yet, but it’s a start). And while I normally wouldn’t bother with the voice recognition, I might give this a try. I mean, I’m usually not a big fan of learning key combinations to give orders…and that’s what they’ve been able to apply this to. Now, you can order your bots around by yelling at your computer. Nifty.

To top it all off, for the non-Windows gamers? they have the demo available for Linux AND for the Mac.

We should try it sometime.

Update: I replaced the “this demo” link with a better download spot.

Pig Lard to Save Lives

Thursday, February 12th, 2004

Those who have known me for a while have heard my advocation of the anti-fanatical muslim pig-lard bomb. If their fundamentalism is their strength…use it against them. ‘Fight without fighting’ - Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

Someone Else is using the idea.

The Truth About The Passion

Thursday, February 12th, 2004

The media channels, major and minor, are all abuzz about Mel Gibson’s “The Passion” and what is perceived to be anti-semitic scenes that accuse the Jews of killing Jesus. The protest by many is that the Romans killed Jesus, not the Jews, and any depiction of their involvement is anti-semitic.

But let us be very, very clear: Mel Gibson did not invent the claim that the Jews were behind the execution of Jesus. That claim is made by the New Testament itself.

Intel has made a breakthrough in using silicon to manipulate light. “Writing in the journal Nature, Intel scientists Ansheng Liu and colleagues said they had built a silicon modulator that can send a billion pulses of light a second down fibre-optic cables.”—Check it out.

Tomcat 5 released

Tuesday, February 10th, 2004

Tomcat 5 has been released. It includes session clustering. Nifty. For those who aren’t familiar, Tomcat is the servlet container that is used in the official Reference Implementation for Java Servlets and JSP’s. A good article on what’s new.

Silent Storm

Monday, February 9th, 2004

Due to strange circumstance, my weekend consisted of almost exclusively sitting in front of my computer, nursing a cough, and playing a game I ordered from Amazon.com: Silent Storm. Let me tell you about the good and the bad.
